TESL stands for Teaching English
as a Second Language. For all those international students in non-English-speaking
countries who take up English as a part of their course, English would be a
‘Second’ Language because their native tongue is their first language. Study of
English would be part of the curriculum for these students, but not in the
capacity of first language, although it might still be in use. Incidentally, TESL includes all those students of English who may be learning the language as
their second, third of fourth language too. Coming from eclectic backgrounds of
different countries and cultures, this is entirely possible.
TESL is not only dedicated to
teach the English language but also works towards minimizing problems in communication
and awareness of issues where English is concerned. The body provides a forum
for learners and teachers of English to unify and interact to enable sharing of
knowledge, impressions and experiences.
TESL is offered as a diploma
program for aspiring teachers of English. To be eligible to take up the
program, they should have a University degree, be proficient in English insofar
as to score well in either TOEFL or IELTS, and pass the interview for
admission. It goes without saying that there is a higher criterion that the
candidates should be desirous of making a career in teaching English. This TESL
Diploma is recognized and valued around the world and would be an asset to any
aspiring teacher.
